Chinese vessels chase Japanese fishing boat near disputed islets
Two vessels of the China Coast Guard chased a Japanese fishing boat in Japanese territorial waters near the disputed Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, Japan Coast Guard said on Saturday.
Friday’s incident triggered Japan to file an official diplomatic protest over the intrusion of Chinese vessels on its territorial waters.
Japan’s head foreign minister to Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau Shigeki Takizaki made a call to the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo to protest the incident.
The Japanese Embassy in Beijing also contacted the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
The contentious islands, called Senkaku in Japan and identified as Diaoyus in China, are the center of the dispute.
The foreign relations of Japan and China deteriorated back in 2012 when Tokyo “nationalised” some of the contentious islets.
