Malacañang congratulates Tagle for being promoted into Cardinal-Bishop
On Monday, spokesperson Harry Roque thanked the now Cardinal-bishop Luis Antonio Tagle for bringing the country honor, despite President Duterte’s past remarks about the prelate.
In a visual press briefing, Roque expressed the Palace’s recognition in the Cardinal-bishop’s recent ascend in the ranks of the Catholic Church.
“Kami po ay binabati ang ating His Eminence Cardinal Antonio Luis Tagle sa kanyang pagtatalaga bilang isang cardinal-bishop…. Ang tagumpay niyo po, your eminence, ay tagumpay ng buong sambayanang Pilipino. Maraming, maraming salamat po sa karangalan and congratulations” Roque stated.
Cardinal-bishop Tagle is the first Filipino to achieve the rank of Cardinal-bishop and the highest-ranking Filipino bishop in the 500 years of the country’s Christianity. Among the 11 Cardinal-bishops, Tagle is to be consulted by the Pope anytime and would assist him in coordinating with the rest of the world’s Cardinals.
President Duterte on March claimed that the former Archbishop of Manila was stripped out of the position after allegedly meddling with politics when in truth, he was obligated to fulfill his duties as the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples in the Holy See of Rome.
The President is yet to retract his statements and no apologies were offered to the Cardinal-bishop.
